Atiku pledges to create constitutional role for traditional institution


The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has pledged to create constitutional roles for the traditional institution in the country if elected as President of Nigeria in next month’s election.

Atiku made the pledge when he paid a courtesy visit on the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council at the Council’s Secretariat on Tuesday in Asaba.

He said traditional rulers play unique roles in peace building and societal development hence the need to accord them constitutional roles.

Atiku said if elected his administration would visit the laws governing the duties of traditional rulers, saying that the traditional rulers have been relegated to the background despite their input in the peace and development of their respective domains.

The PDP presidential candidate who said he was at the traditional rulers secretariat to seek royal blessings on his campaign in the state, called on the people of the state to vote for all the PDP candidates to enable the party confront the challenges bedevilling the country since the APC led federal government came into office since 2015.

Atiku said the PDP has a formidable team made up of people with credible democratic credentials that would bring the country back on track and solicited the support of all Nigerians.

He also lauded the traditional rulers for their support for the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa-led administration who is his running mate, adding that they should sustain their support to enable him do more for Deltans.

Responding, the Chairman, Delta State Traditional Rulers Council and Orodje of Okpe, Retired Major General Felix Mujaekpero, Orhue l, thanked Atiku for his choice of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate and prayed God to grant them success in their political ambition.

The Orodje said traditional rulers were non-partisan and  expressed hope that the best candidate would emerge following the nation’s predicament.

He reminded Nigerians of the need to arm themselves with their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVCs) to enable them elect credible leaders in the forthcoming general elections.

Dignitaries that witnessed the meeting were Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Vice Presidential candidate of the PDP, the National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, former Vice President Architect Namadi Sambo, Senator Bukola Saraki, Alhaji Sule Lamido, Prince Uche Secondus, Senator Liyel Imoke, Hon Yakubu Dogara, the State Deputy Governor, Deacon Kingsley Otuaro and the state governorship candidate of the PDP, Chief Sheriff Oborevwori among others.
